2017 International Energy Workshop
The 36th edition of the International Energy Workshop (IEW) was hosted by the Joint Global Change Research Institute of Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) and University of Maryland (UMD), in College Park, Maryland, USA on July 12-14, 2017.
About University of Maryland
The University of Maryland in College Park, near Washington, DC, is a public research university founded in 1856, and it is the flagship institution of the University System of Maryland (UMD). UMD is dedicated to developing and disseminating scientific knowledge and its applications for the benefit of all people, worldwide. The current enrolment at UMD is about 40,000 students from 130 different countries, pursuing their degrees in more than 100 undergraduate majors and 120 graduate programs.
About Joint Global Change Research Institute of Pacific Northwest National Laboratory
Powered by the creativity and innovation of 4,300 scientists, engineers and professional support staff, The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is advancing the frontiers of science and addressing some of the most challenging problems in energy, the environment and national security. PNNL researchers provide national and international leadership in; 1) deepen understanding of climate science; 2) invent the future power grid; 3) prevent nuclear proliferation; and 4) speed environmental remediation. The Joint Global Change Research Institute (JGCRI) is a partnership between PNNL and UMD and it was established in 1991 to address complex scientific challenges and opportunities at the interface of human and natural systems.
Call for Papers – The deadline for paper submission is February 1st, 2017
Researchers and practitioners in developed and developing countries have been invited to submit original papers with new and innovative results on scientific or practical experiences on the economics of energy and climate change. As is customary for the IEW, papers should have been quantitative and rigorous. A (non-exclusive) list of potential conference topics was:
• Energy and Climate Systems with a focus on adaptation and mitigation strategies
• Economics of renewable energy technologies
• Modelling sustainable systems and meeting sustainable development goals
• Energy demand and supply, and energy efficiency
• Smart cities, stable grid and metering
• Socioeconomics of the energy transition
• Addressing uncertainties in the transformation of the energy system
• Post Paris climate policy and implementation approaches for Nationally Determined
Commitments
• Mid-century carbon management strategies for energy systems
Selected papers have been presented and discussed in thematic sessions, circulated during the meeting and also posted on the meeting website.

Submission of papers
Paper or long abstracts (minimum 1000 words) submission to the 36th edition of the International Energy Workshop has been closed on 1 February 2017.
Please note that paper selection has become increasingly competitive in recent years. Submissions that fully describe a complete analysis are generally more likely to be accepted than long abstracts. In particular, when submitting a long abstract, please ensure that the study and results are sufficiently described to allow comparison with full paper submissions. Each person can present only one selected paper, although multiple submissions are allowed. Please kindly fill in one online form for each paper.
Program Committee
The selection of submitted papers and long abstracts was directed and made by the IEW Program Committee, which included, among others, the IEW co-directors and the 2016 local organisers:
• Geoffrey Blanford, Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI)
• Massimo Tavoni, Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei (FEEM)
• Bob van der Zwaan, Energy research Centre of the Netherlands (ECN)
• Jae Edmonds, Joint Global Change Research Institute of Pacific Northwest National Lab (PNNL)
• Leon Clarke, Joint Global Change Research Institute of Pacific Northwest National Lab (PNNL)
• Nathan Hultman, School of Public Policy & Center for Global Sustainability, University of Maryland (UMD)
• Michael Kintner-Meyer, Joint Global Change Research Institute of Pacific Northwest National Lab (PNNL)
• Fernando Mirales-Wilhelm, Earth System Science Interdisciplinary Center, University of Maryland (UMD)
• Ghassem Asrar, Joint Global Change Research Institute of Pacific Northwest National Lab (PNNL)
